In the owners manual, (more than likely online if you didn't get one), there is a listing of something like "Required volume" or "required airspace". If not, the at least have to give you Thiele-Small parameters. Those describe the driver in much greater detail than a simple volume number. If you have a required volume to work with that, go with it, and go with a sealed enclosure if you are DIYing. They are far easier to make. You want to make sure the box you make has enough airspace for your driver, or at least within 15% of your required volume. Polyfill can only do so much. Ok check this out, I'm bored while I'm making dinner, so I'll ramble. Sealed enclosures are just that, closed off from outside air on the other side of the speaker. All your sound comes from the speaker. These enclosures, on the same driver, will typically be tighter and lower. Meaning they can hit the lower end frequencies the driver is capable of, and they tend to have a cleaner sound because there is only one source of sound. Ported, slotted or bass-reflex enclosures have some other device adding sound. Either a port tube, a slotted opening, or a passive radiator. These enclosures are tuned to a certian frequency, where their response tends to hump. Ports are designed by varying the port tube diameter and length. Passive radiators are dummy drivers, meaning cones only with added weight; no motor structures or power running to them. Bass reflex enclosures tend to be louder, due to there being an additional point source. However, an inproperly designed bass reflex enclosure can add distortion if the two sources get out of phase from each other (one is firing out while the other is coming down from peak, or anything 180° between there). A properly designed enclosure will not have this problem. In general, Sub A will sound deeper and more musically accurate. Sub A in a ported box will tend to be louder it did in the sealed box. If that don't cover it, shoot me an email and I can talk your ear off.
